18. GOALS FOR FELLOWSHIP TRAINING AND CAREER NAME (Last, first, middle initial) SAFO PATRICK K. INSTITUTION MENTOR SUNY @ Stony Brook Dr. Paul Brehm INSTITUTION/COMPANY SUPERVISOR/EMPLOYER My career goal is to work as a physician scientist practicing medicine as well performing biomedical research. As a scientist, I would like to do basic research and extend it.to the well being of patients. Training in the combined MD/Ph.D. program at Harvard Medical School (HMS) would prepare me for this goal. Aside from its excellent medical training, the MD/Ph.D. program at HMS includesan intensive scientific training in basic research. I hope to train in the neuroscience department, doing research on ion channels to study the nervous system. Recent advances in this field have exposed other pertinent aspects to be investigated. Furthermore, the nervous system is pivotal to our existence .and day-to-day activities, and thus a very important as well as interesting field to study. The knowledge and skills obtained from training at HMS under this fellowship would prepare me to pursue a neuronal related research that can be projected into medicine in the future. SPONSOR 19.
