This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. This prospective pilot trial seeks to evaluate the effects of probiotic supplementation via yogurt on markers of liver function and psychometric test performance in cirrhotic patients with minimal hepatic encephalopahty (MHE). Thirty patients with cirrhosis, MHE, and increased liver marker enzymes AST and ALT will be recruited through the Hepatology Clinics of FH. Twenty will consume 6 oz. yogurt twice a day for 60 days, while 10 controls will not. Liver function testing, basic metabolic panel, INR, and venous ammonia will be performed at 0, 30, and 60 days, and psychometric testing at 0 and 60 days, while TNFa and IL-6 will be evaluated at 0 and 60 days. GCRC Nursing is requested to assist with blood draws, dispensing yogurt cups, and collection/counting of yogurt caps to ensure compliance. Biostatistics support is requested for data analysis. In addition, GCRC space is requested for the administration of tests and the questionnaire, and GCRC support for the laboratory tests, the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale III record booklets, the yogurt, and patient stipends.
