This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing theresources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject andinvestigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed isfor the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The project is designed to evaluate the impact of pregnancy on the health of HIV-infected women, the mechanisms and timing of vertical HIV transmission, rates of maternal-infant transmission (overall and among different subpupolations of at-risk pregnant HIV-infected women) and to understand the co-factors related to perinatal HIV transmission. An additional hypotheses is to evaluate the safety of prescribed antiretroviral therapy (maternal or infant) with specific emphasis on mitochondrial toxicity and glucose and lipid metabolism.
