Abstract

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. It is well established that type 1 diabetics exhibit a greater incidence and severity of periodontal disease that non diabetic populations. Overall, the incidence of infection is increased in patients with diabetes mellitus and infections are most likely to have a complicated course in diabetics that in non diabetic. The objective of this study is to examine the neutrophil response to P. gingivitis and gingivitis in Type I diabetes patients with periodontal disease.
