This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. It is well established that type 1 diabetics exhibit a greater incidence and severity of periodontal disease that non diabetic populations. Overall, the incidence of infection is increased in patients with diabetes mellitus and infections are most likely to have a complicated course in diabetics that in non diabetic. The objective of this study is to examine the neutrophil response to P. gingivitis and gingivitis in Type I diabetes patients with periodontal disease.
