This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing theresources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject andinvestigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed isfor the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The objective of this pilot study is to evaluate the utility of cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR) in assessing mitral valve prolapse (MVP) and to investigate the role of TGF- in the pathogenesis of MVP. This is a prospective cohort study. The investigators plan to prospectively enroll 60 classic MVP patients with varying mitral regurgitation severity: 30 with posterior leaflet prolapse only and 30 with either anterior or bi-leaflet prolapse. Half the patients in each group will be pre-mitral valve surgery patients with severe regurgitation.
