This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing theresources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject andinvestigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed isfor the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The purpose of this study is to evaluate patients that are in the need of sedation and pain medication while on a breathing machine while admitted to the Intensive Care Unit. This study does not involve any experimental drugs, treatments or devices. The study will not affect the care that the subject receives. Often patients on ventilators become confused in the ICU. This confusion is associated (longer hospital days and even increased chance of death). The purpose of this study is to see if the ICU confusion or sedation and pain medications are linked to these memory and attention problems that occur after the patients leave the hospital. The study records what happens to a person while in the hospital and then records if you have any attention, memory problems when once the patient goes home. A total of 200 subjects will be recruited.
