Abstract

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing theresources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject andinvestigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed isfor the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.Various phylogenomic tools for comparative sequence analysis are being developed in my research group. These include phylognenetic methods that incorporate structural information as well as gene tree/species tree reconciliation methodlogy. Additionally, positive selection has been a focus in the group and methodology for the enhanced detection of positive selection in genomes is being developed. Webtools will make some of this software generally accessible.Positively selected genes are candidates for lineage-specific functional change. In the past, large scale screens of comparative genomic data have identified such candidate proteins and these are currently subject to experimental analysis, including myostatin and plasminogen activator as model systems for the interplay between positive selection and gene duplication.
