This application request funds to offset the travel expenses of the speakers who will participate in the combined 42nd Annual Clinical Conference and 52nd Annual Symposium on Fundamental Cancer Research, """"""""Cancer Research at the Millennium"""""""" sponsored by The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Clinical Cancer Center. The meeting will be held January 9-12, 2000 in Houston, Texas at the Westin Galleria Hotel. A stellar international roster of speakers will provide overviews of recent progress and set the course of future directions in cancer research for the new millennium. Educational opportunities, especially for students, are provided throughout the meeting by design. Ample time is scheduled for formal questions/answers during each of the six sessions. Additionally, poster sessions are scheduled at which proffered poster abstracts are displayed. A special emphasis is made to encourage student and junior faculty participation in these sessions. The symposium will focus on six specific, promising aspects of cancer research. They represent areas which have witnessed significant developments and offer promise for improved strategies in cancer detection/diagnosis, treatment, and prevention. The meting will focus on the six following areas: 1) Growth and Differentiation; 2) Immunology; 3) Prevention; 4) Molecular Diagnostics and Therapeutics; 5) Metastasis; and 6) Genetics. In addition, the Keynote address will be delivered by Dr. David Baltimore whose contributions are well known. This lecture should set the tone for the entire meeting. The Ernst W. Bertner Memorial Award will be presented to Dr. Robert Weinberg of the Whitehead Institute of Biomedical Research who has made several seminal contributions to our understanding of the genetics and proliferation of cancer. The Heath Award will be presented to Dr. Waun-Ki Hong of the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center who has pioneered the filed of chemoprevention and the role of retinoids in cancer control. The Wilson S. Stone Memorial Award will be presented to an outstanding young scientist whose research has impacted the field of cancer research.
