EXCEED THE SPACE PROVIDED. Funds are requested for continued support of a research training program in clinical and basic science related to rheumatic diseases. The program is centered in the Division of Rheumatology of the Department of Medicine, which occupies over 10,000 square feet of research space, and the Division of Pediatric Rheumatology of the Department of Pediatrics. The Director is Philip L. Cohen, M.D., Professor of Medicine, who heads a committee of full time Rheumatology faculty. The committee decides recruitment, evaluation, guidance, and training requirements. Support is requested for six postdoctoral and three predoctoral trainees. Post-doctoral trainees will preferentially be individuals who have completed their Internal Medicine or Pediatric residency training and who wish to complete specialty training in rheumatology and prepare for an academic career. Such individuals will be supported by institutional funds for a full year of clinical Rheumatology, and will then move onto the training grant for 2-3 years of laboratory or other research experience. Post-doctoral M.D.'s who have completed their clinical subspecialty training or Ph.D.'s may also be directly recruited into preceptors' laboratories. Ph.D.'s will engage in research related to rheumatic diseases. Predoctoral trainees will come from the ImmunologyGraduate Program; these will be selected based on their commitment to rheumatic disease research, their academic records, the quality of their past training, and letters of recommendation. Trainees will be linked with individual preceptors, who will be largely responsible for guidingtheir research. An extensive program of additional course work, seminars, journal clubs, seminar series, and weekly research in progress conferences will provide additional training. Clinical fellows on the training grant will limit their clinical responsibilitiesto no more than 10% of their time. The research program has considerable strength in autoimmunity, immunology, cell biology, molecular biology, clinical research, and epidemiology. The recent infusion of a significant number of new talented faculty adds to the great existing strength of the institution, providing a trainingprogram of exceptional depth and quality.
