There are many facets of basic, translational, and clinical research that require specific informationmanagement tools. I2B2 will establish a framework and 'plug-in' architecture for the integration of tools thatspan all aspects of research in the genomics age, and develop for this framework specific algorithms andsoftware that target the needs of the clinical researcher. Examples of these needs include the acquisitionand validation of diverse phenotypic data, and the correlation of phenotypic data with genotypic data andevolutionary conservation data. This Core will use the three driving biological projects in Core 3 as bothrepresentative of the biocomputing needs for genomics studies and also as specific projects to help toprioritize the large number of possible tools used in this context. This Core will develop a robust architecture for the 'clinical research chart' that is a necessaryfoundations! step. The chart will be based on a proposed architecture called the 12B2Hive that uses modularcelts of functionality to flexibly and consistently organize diverse research information that are basesequences coming from high-throughput machines.
The specific aims are to provide clinical investigators with the software tools necessary to collect andmanage project related clinical research data as a cohesive entity - to construct tile modem clinical researchchart. This proposal will not create all of the numerous software tools needed as this field develops, therefore, to establish a future for interoperable biocomputational tools, this proposal will design and developan interoperable software framework for the research chart that can be extended for both unanticipated dataas well as functionality. Specific deliverables include: 1} A standard architecture for the research chart, 2)Specifications for nomenclature and data representation for the research chart, 3) Programming APIs forresearch chart plug-ins, and 4) Specific functionality for the research chart targeting clinical researchers.
