This project will develop new catalysts to reduce perchlorate to chloride in brines produced from the regeneration of ion-exchange resins used in remedial systems. Current use of these catalysts is successful only at pH < 3. The PIs will attempt to expand the pH range for reduction of perchlorate into the circumneutral range and reduce perchlorate at ambient temperatures and pressures. The new catalysts contain Pd and Re on supports such as zeolites, activated alumina and functionalized mesoporous silica. Several graduate and undergraduate students will be involved in the research, and the research will be integrated into classroom activities. Teaching modules will be developed for K12 students.
