During the summers of 2007, 2008, and 2009, the University of North Carolina, Asheville Mathematics Department will host a Summer REU program in Groups, Graphs, and Geometry. Eight (8) students per summer will take part in intensive study of original mathematical problems arising at the overlap between the fields of group theory, graph theory, and geometry. Emphasis will be placed on projects that make use of techniques from more than one of these fields. Topics addressed will involve relatively elementary mathematical methods and so will be accessible to talented students who have completed no more than two years of an undergraduate mathematics curriculum. Participating students will receive a $3200 stipend for taking part in the program. All qualified students will be invited to apply, though recruitment will focus in the Southeastern United States, with particular encouragement given to members of traditionally under-represented groups.
