This award provides funding to help defray the expenses of graduate students and postdocs attending the "International Conference on Inverse Problems and PDE Control" that will be held from July 29-August 3, 2012, at Sichuan University in Chengu, China.

The focus of the conference is on various common techniques used in the study of inverse coefficient problems and control problems for partial differential equations. The tandem of inverse and control problems for partial differential equations constitutes a rapidly growing area of mathematics. In addition to its important theoretical component, it also has significant impact in applied science and engineering, including applications to stabilization, identification and design of physical systems (e.g., quantum control), image processing, mathematical finance, astronomy, geosciences, medical imaging and nondestructive evaluation of materials, among many others. The conference program provides ample opportunity for graduate students, postdocs, and other young scientists to present their work.

Project Report

This project partially funded the participation of junior scientists in the International Conference on Inverse Problems (IP) and Partial Differential Equation (PDE) Control held in Chengdu, China, July 30-August 3, 2012, at Sichuan University. Inverse problems and PDE control is a rapidly growing area of mathematics. In addition to its important theoretical component it also has significant impact in applied science and engineering, including: applications to stabilization, identification and design of physical systems (e.g. quantum control), image processing, mathematical finance, astronomy, geophysical prospection, medical imaging and non-destructive evaluation of materials, among several others. There has been several important developments in these two areas in the last few years. One of the goals of the conference was to bring many of these developments to advanced graduate students, postdocs and other scientists in the US, China and other countries. Another important objective of the conference was to foster international cooperation between China and the US and other countries by bringing different areas of expertise in PDE Control and IP in one event. Another goal was to increase the interaction between researchers in IP and PDE control, and to also have increased interaction between junior and senior researchers in these fields. These objectives were accomplished. There were approximately 75 participants in this event from China, the US and other countries. The NSF grant supported 13 junior participants from the US.
