This award will support the participation of graduate students and postdocs in the "Fifteenth Riviere-Fabes Symposium" that will be held at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities from April 20-22, 2012.

This annual conference, of which the 2012 meeting will be the fifteenth in the series, celebrates the mathematical legacy of Nestor M. Riviere and Eugene B. Fabes by focusing on recent developments in analysis, especially in the field of partial differential equations. The 2012 program will feature two principle speakers (Panagiotis Souganidis and Antonio Cordoba), each of whom will give a two-hour lecture, and a number of one-hour talks delivered primarily by young mathematicians (Thomas Alazard, Giuseppe Mingione, Gabriella Tarantello, Rachel Ward). The program allows ample time for informal discussion among the participants.

Project Report

The 15th Riviere-Fabes Symposium on Analysis and PDE was held April 20-22, 2012 at School of Mathematics, University of Minnesota. As the name tells, this Symposium honors two late professors, Nestor Riviere and Eugene (Gene) Fabes. Minnesota was fortunate to hire these brilliant mathematicians and close friends almost simultaneously, Nestor in 1966, and Gene in 1967. After cancer claimed Nestor's life in 1978 at a young age of 38, the annual Riviere Lectures were established in his memory. In 1997, Gene died of a heart attack soon after his 60th birthday. Since 1998, Riviere Lectures turned into the Riviere-Fabes Symposia, which take place each April. Traditionally, the program features 2 speakers who give two lectures each and 4 one-hour speakers. This Symposium has international status, and the selection of the speakers is world-wide. The list of the previous speakers includes 4 recipients of Fields Medals: Jean Bourgain, Charles Fefferman, Terence Tao, and Cedric Villani. As in the previous years, the programs started on Friday afternoon, and finished before Sunday noon. This way there was minimal interference with the teaching schedules of the speakers and participants. Extra time was allocated between the lectures for informal discussions and exchange of ideas. Out of about 60 participants, the majority came from outside of University of Minnesota. The NSF Grant helped to provide travel support for 27 junior researchers. For this Symposium, the two-hour speakers were Panagiotis Souganidis (University of Chicago) and Antonio Cordoba (Universidad Autonoma de Madrid). The one-hour lectures were given by Thomas Alazard (CNRS and Ecole Normale Superieure, Paris), Giuseppe Mingione (Universita degli Studi di Parma), Gabriella Tarantello (Universita di Roma `Tor Vergata'), and Rachel Ward (University of Texas at Austin). The Organizing Committee consisted of Markus Keel, Nicolai Krylov, Peter Polacik, Fernando Reitich, Mikhail Safonov, Daniel Spirn, Vladimir Sverak More detailed information can be found on the see the web page www.math.umn.edu/conferences/riv_fabes_12/
