The conference "Encounters in Geometry" will take place June 3 to 7, 2013 in Cabo Frio, Brazil. We have selected three topics that have been particularly productive over the last few years, on which most talks will concentrate: 1) manifolds with lower curvature bounds, including non-negative and positive curvature; 2) Riemannian foliations, including the orbit geometry of group actions; 3) submanifold geometry.

The grant will supply travel from the US to Rio de Janeiro for 10-15 graduate students and 10-15 mathematicians from the US, with an emphasis on recent Ph.D.'s. Local support is paid for by Brazilian grants. Participation by women and minorities will be actively sought and encouraged. The conference will provide an environment for American graduate students and recent Ph.D.'s in which they can learn about new developments in geometry, through research talks by Brazilian and international experts. A second goal is to introduce geometers in Brazil to subjects currently active in the US. The participants will also be given an an opportunity to present their results through talks and poster sessions.

Project Report

The purpose of the grant was to bring together American researches, graduate students, and postdocs with their Brazilian counterparts in order to encourage interaction between the two groups. Furthermore, to expose especially graduate students, and postdocs to new research areas and recent results. The speakers also discussed open problems, some of which would be appropriate for graduate students as well. The talks gave excellent expository presentations of new results, new areas that have been opend up recently, and open problems in those areas. There were sufficiently long breaks between talks to encourage interaction and discussions among the participants. The location (isolated with little discration nearby) was ideal to keep the participantstogether and there were many fruitful discussions. There were 19 speakers from USA, Brazil Germany and France with a very broad spectrum of topics covered. The grant supported travel for 25 participants based at American Universities: 9 graduate students, 6 postdocs and 10 more senior mathematicians that did not have support from an NSF grant. Local support (in particular expenses for accomodatuons) was provided from Brazilian grants. Program, titles and abstracts, as well as slides of power point presentations, and list of participants are available on the website, which will be available in the future: www.impa.br/opencms/pt/eventos/store_old/evento_1302
