This project provides support for the development of new analytical protocols on the multicollector ICPMS NEPTUNE in the WHOI ICPMS Facility. It is the continuation (phase 2) of a three-year technician support grant that facilitated the development of multiple state-of-the-art analytical protocols since 2004. The following analytical developments are planned for the 2007-2008 funding period: (1) Using nickel as a new isotope tracer of oceanic processes, (2) In situ Pb and Sr isotope analysis of melt inclusions in OIB phenocrysts, (3) Low-level Os isotope analyses using transient laser signals, (4) In situ Mg isotope analysis of silicates and carbonates, (5) Detection of enriched isotope tags in marine fish otoliths, (6) Low-level Fe-isotope analysis of seawater, (7) Natural rhenium isotope variability, and (8) Selenium isotope determinations using online hydride generation. We anticipate that the NEPTUNE ICPMS will be a self-sustaining operation after the end of the funding period.
