This award provides support for a three year continuing award, a renewal of the NIBIB-NSF Bioengineering and Bioinformatics Summer Institutes (BBSI) Program at New Jersey Institute of Technology, entitled, "BBSI-BioMEMS Summer Institute at NJIT," under the direction of Dr. William C. Hunter. The Institute will continue to host a ten week summer program for 12 undergraduate and graduate students for a total of 36 students throughout the three year duration of the program.

Intellectual Merit: The project introduces a novel intellectual component --the element of engineering design. Learning to design is the intellectual heart of engineering, and it is also the heart of the NIBIB-vision that there is an essential mode of progress in medicine and medical research through technological development. The proposed program will increase the pool of students knowledgeable in microtechnology that is applied to emerging new fields of medicine. Student projects will contribute to the advancement of micro-fabrication and nano-fabrication of devices for Medical diagnosis, therapy, and research.

Broader Impacts: The potentially broad impacts that micro-fabricated and nano-fabricated devices are likely to exert on technologies that cover a wide spectrum--for medical diagnosis, therapy, and research. The proposed training activity will exert broad impact by enhancing the pool of talent that has both knowledge of microtechnology and an interest in applying it to biologically and medically relevant problesm.

This BBSI program is being funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH)/National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB).
