In 2004, CCRTD decided to focus on building a nationally recognized program in prostate cancer research, education and community service. Since then, we have actively recruited prostate cancer experts to CCRTD and Clark Atlanta University in the past seven years. We have recruited two new faculty members in the Department of Biological Sciences between 2004-2007 and an additional three junior faculty members with interests in prostate cancer research between 2007-2012. In this proposal we are requesting partial support for the recruitment of three new faculty; two Assistant Professors and one Associate Professor. The faculty will be added one each in 2014, 2015 and 2016. After several discussions among the current CCRTD scientists and with the Institutional Advisory Committee, it was decided that the expertise is needed in the following areas: 1. Prostate cancer in vivo biology 2. Epidemiology of prostate cancer in minority populations 3. Cell and developmental biology 4. Prostate cancer health disparities 5. Therapeutics The new hires will increase capacity, add diversity of research areas and training mentors and open new teaching and learning avenues for graduate and undergraduate African American students. The completed team should provide a greater reach and depth to understand molecular biology of prostate cancer in relation to racial disparities and incidence at the bench and the community level.
