This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing theresources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject andinvestigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed isfor the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.Different experiments will be performed on neurologically normal subjects to explore the contribution of various cortical areas to sequence learning during practice ('on-line' learning) and those critical to the development of skill following practice ('off-line' learning). Investigating either type of learning involves the application of TMS to a cortical site guided by a frameless stereotaxic system using an anatomical brain MRI. Different experiments will differ in the brain area to which TMS is applied and in the time when TMS is applied relative to skill practice. To study on-line learning TMS will be applied before learning a sequence of finger movements. In contrast off-line learning will be studied by applying TMS after a subject has practiced a new sequence of finger movements.
