This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing theresources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject andinvestigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed isfor the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The purpose of this pilot study is to evaluate the effects of a continuous intravenous infusion of nesiritide (recombinant human B-type natriuretic peptide) on postoperative hemodynamics and diuresis in infants with congenital heart disease who undergo cardiac surgery requiring cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). If nesiritide is well tolerated and significantly increases urine output in patients enrolled in this pilot study, a subsequent larger investigation will be undertaken to assess its effect on meaningful clinical outcomes including time to chest closure, first extubation and days of intensive care.
