Abstract

The Reaching for Excellence in Adolescent Care and Health (REACH) Project of the Adolescent Medicine HIV/AIDS Research Network will conduct a descriptive study of the full spectrum of HIV Disease and its behavioral components in adolescents ages 12-18 years who have become infected with HIV through sex and IV drug behavior. The goal of the Network is to better understand HIV disease progression and comorbidity in adolescents and thus improve health care management. This goal will be addressed through the enrollment of HIV infected adolescents into a standardized base protocol to characterize population-based spectrum of disease, disease progression and the effect of co-morbidity with other sexually transmitted diseases and other viral infections, such as cytomegalovirus, the effect of HIV infection on pubertal growth, the effect of hormonal variation on HIV progression in the adolescent population and the standardization and evaluation of health care services.
