This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing theresources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject andinvestigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed isfor the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The Outreach Core carried out the following activities: 1) recruitment of students for the Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) from the underrepresented groups and non-network institutions in the State; 2) organization of the invited seminar series; and 3) organization of biannual retreats. The SURP was advertised through the RI-INBRE web site, presentations at summer internship fairs, and postings at other institutions web sites. A total of 20 applications were received from well qualified applicants. Six students (3 females and 3 males) were accepted. Three of the accepted students were from underepresented groups and three were from non-network institutions. These students were from the University of Rhode Island, University of Massachusetts, and Community College of Rhode Island. We have further strengthened our ties with the Community College of Rhode Island and expect to receive more applications in future years. Expansion of the outreach activity to include high school science teachers and students will be a new activity for RI-INBRE. We intend to do so in collaboration with Project Arise that is funded by a 3-year SEPA grant from NCRR to Brown University. The Core organized nine seminars at the University of Rhode Island. In the future, all seminars will be videocasted to the Network institutions. The 2006 Summer Retreat was held on Friday, June 16, 2006 in collaboration with the Superfund Basic Research Program at Brown University. The program was attended by 80 participants and included three invited talks and 24 poster presentations. The Winter Retreat was held on January 26, 2007 at Salve Regina University and was attended by their President and the Vice President. A total of 100 individuals attended this event that included a plenary lecture and presentations by selected RI-INBRE investigators. In addition, 29 posters were presented. Both retreats provided opportunities for the investigators and their students to share research findings and foster research collaborations.
