This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing theresources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject andinvestigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed isfor the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.The CPN Website Core provides a powerful database reference and communication resource for CPN investigators and for collaborating laboratories within and outside of the center. The CPN website has been configured to provide web-based visibility for all CPN faculty and staff members, to facilitate internet access and collaboration between CPN laboratories, to disseminate information (meeting, seminars, etc.) and to provide a central site for secure data storage and retrieval. The Home Page for the CPN is continually updated, with current information on events, new appointees, positions available, funding opportunities and contact data. The CPN website also includes links to the National Center for Research Resources and to pages describing the mentoring program and several funding opportunities provided through the CPN, including the Neuroscience Summer Scholars and the Small Grants programs. Additionally, an embedded search engine can search only the CPN website, or the whole of the WWW. A highly secure, centralized electronic database is maintained for the CPN's Human Brain Collection. The database permits searches for specific criteria within the vast amount of data accumulated for each individual case. The database allows authorized users to conduct a query on any combination of the 237 fields of data associated with each individual case, producing a sub-set of cases based on the search criteria. The search results can then be easily exported to a file for further manipulation by external data analysis programs such as SPSS or Microsoft Excel. The Brain Collection Database is a powerful tool for research studies utilizing post-mortem brain tissue provided by the Human Brain Collection Core.Dr. James P. Shaffery is Core Leader of the Center for Psychiatric Neuroscience Website Core. In addition to his responsibilities as Website Core Leader, Dr. Shaffery has served as Chairperson of the Psychiatry Computer Committee. He has served on this committee since 1999, having been appointed during the University-wide effort to ensure Y2K compliance. He has also served on several ad hoc computer committees, including the UMC Information Systems Strategic Planning Committee. Dr. Shaffery has extensive experience with computer programming languages and has been involved with systems administration on mainframes as well as personal computers and workstations.
