The goal of the Pilot Project Core is to identify talented investigators and provide the Incentives and support that will enable them to conduct new research projects that will maximize the theme, reach, Impact, and resources of our Center in the most efficient and effective ways possible. To achieve this goal, the specific aims of the Pilot Core will be to: 1) Use inputs from our Advisory Committee, community partners and other networks to develop innovative priority topic areas for targeting pilot project research, 2) Solicit high quality pilot proposals from a broad an array of eligible investigators, 3) Review proposals using rigorous scientific criteria, funding only those that meet or exceed the criteria, 4) Monitor and guide the progress of the pilots in achieving their stated goals and objectives, and 6) Continuously evaluate the success of the above processes using the Glasgow et al. (1999) RE-AIM framework. Drs. Susan Hughes and Tamar Heller will oversee the Pilot Core. Two Year 1 and two Year 2 pilots are proposed for a total of four pilots. The Year 1 Prohaska pilot will test the translation of Strong for Life into the Illinois Community Care Program for frail, homebound elderly. The remaining three pilots (DerAnanian Year 1, Marques Year 2, and Castillo Year 2) will adapt and translate evidence-based programs or methodologies to Hispanic/Latino populations in an effort to reduce health disparities.
Our proposed Roybal pilots attempt to adapt existing effective programs and research tools to increase their effectiveness for and relevance to older minority populations. The first four pilots address the heatlh promotion needs of frail homebound elderly and Hispanic older adults.
