This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. There is an urgent medical need to treat osteoporosis and osteoporosis-induced injury. This compound is designed to treat osteoporosis-weakened lumbar vertebral bodies. The purpose of this experiment is to train clinical investigators on the surgical procedures including approach, material preparation and delivery of the synthetic cortical bone to the weakened lumbar vertebral body. The surgical procedure and delivery of the test material will be guided with fluoroscopy. The successful training of the clinical investigators will minimize and potential adverse events or pain and suffering of the patient(s) during the clinical study.
