SC DHEC BOL - ISO AbstractThe South Carolina Bureau of Laboratories (SC BOL) serves as the primary servicinglaboratory for state manufactured food regulatory programs within the SC Department ofHealth and Environmental Control and the SC Department of Agriculture. The purposeof this project is for the SC BOL Food Microbiology Laboratory to achieve and maintainISO/IEC 17025:2005 accreditation by an internationally recognized accreditation body tosupport efforts to establish a nationally integrated food safety system. The BOLmaintains a quality management system in its Office of Quality. The integration ofISO/IEC 17025:2005 standards into this existing system will be managed through a LeanSix Sigma DMEDI process that will provide management tools to keep the project ontrack and allow us to assess program progress, evaluate the process for preparing forfull implementation of ISO standards, and monitor process implementation. During thefirst year of this agreement, the SC BOL will conduct a gap analysis to facilitate theestablishment of a project plan, contract with an independent ISO consultant, and hireand train necessary staff to manage the process involved in integrating ISO/IEC17025:2005 standards into our current quality management system. In subsequentyears, the SC BOL plans to bring processes and protocols up to ISO/IEC 17025:2005standards according to the project plan, continue to fully support the FERN, participate inannual proficiency testing programs, continue to train staff in ISO and othermicrobiological procedures, update facilities to increase specimen processing capacity,pursue electronic data exchange through eLEXNET, and ultimately obtain ISO/IEC17025:2005 accreditation by June 30, 2017.

SC DHEC BOL - ISO Narrative The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control, Bureau of Laboratories, intends to achieve ISO/IEC 17025:2005 accreditation through this cooperative agreement. Laboratory accreditation will contribute to a quicker acceptance of analytical results by the FDA and other regulatory agencies for enforcement actions, surveillance purposes and during response to food borne outbreaks. This will contribute to the establishment of a nationally integrated food safety system to make the public's food supply safer and more secure.
