The International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) has developed a training plan to provide hazardous materials health and safety training to its membership, in particular the Hoisting and Portable (H&P) engineers and Stationary Engineers. They plan to expand and administer their on-going training effort to ensure that their membership who could work in hazardous waste cleanup have the skills to recognize and control hazards. The IUOE is a current grantee in the NIEHS program. They claim to be the largest provider of hazardous waste worker training in the United States since the inception of their training program and grant funding in 1988. Under their current NIEHS cooperative agreement they trained 7,439 workers in the 40-hour worker course and 22,803 workers in the 8 hour refresher. This training program is one part of the IUOE s long tradition of providing worker training programs, including a formal apprenticeship program and Job Corps Program.
