This project will support travel by approximately 11-12 students at U.S. institutions to attend the 11th Annual International Conference on Mobile Systems, Applications, and Services (MobiSys 2013). MobiSys, sponsored by ACM SIGMOBILE, will be held June 25th-28th, 2013 in Taipei, Taiwan. Priority will be given to students who will benefit from attending this conference, but are unlikely to attend due to the unavailability of travel funding. MobiSys is the premier conference in the field of mobile computing and system integration. It offers a variety of technical activities including keynote and contributed presentations, a poster session, demonstrations, three workshops, and a PhD Forum.
This project furthers both research and education, by enabling graduate students conducting research in the field to attend high-caliber technical presentations, be exposed to state-of-the-art research, and interact with leading researchers and fellow graduate students from around the world. The impact to the students' careers from attending MobiSys 2013 is expected to be substantial.
In this proposal, funds in amount of $20,000 were requested to support students at U.S. institutions to attend the 11th Annual International Conference on Mobile Systems, Applications, and Services (MobiSys 2013 (www.sigmobile.org/mobisys/2013/). MobiSys was held on June 25-28, 2013 in Taipei, Taiwan. The funding requested was used to help cover travel expenses for qualified graduate students. The travel awards provide up to $1500 per student helped to cover the costs related to student’s travel (US-operated economy airfare, lodging, meals, and conference registration fees). We encouraged the participation from women, underrepresented minorities, and persons with disabilities. Preference was given to the PhD Forum participants and the presenters at the main conference. Out of the 51 student applications received, 12 full wards in amount of $1500 and 2 awards in amount of $1000 with the total of $20,000 were awarded to 14 students. However, due to last minute changes of some of the students plans and the use of non-US operated airlines, 3 students of the 12 full awarded students were eligible only for a partial credits that takes the total awarded amount to $17,905.95. The PI and his institution research office smoothly administered and processed these awards. The broader impact of this proposal concerns the development of the graduate students that were able to attend MobiSys 2013 due to the provided travel support. The requested travel funds allowed graduate students conducting research in the field to attend high-caliber technical presentations, be exposed to state-of-the-art research, and interact with leading researchers and fellow graduate students. The exposure to the technical content of MobiSys 2013 inspired students to address the tough problems in their respective field, with a long-term benefit of scientific progress for these types of networks. The event was an excellent opportunity for the awarded students to learn about hot topics in mobile systems and applications, open research problems, and possible career options after graduation.
