This award supports a new REU site in physics at Alabama A&M University. Approximately 6 students will be selected for a period of ten weeks during the summer. One of the goals of the site is to increase the diversity of the participants by targeting institutions both where research opportunity is limited and where there are a significant fraction of students who are underrepresented minorities. The students will work on a research project with a faculty mentor. The program emphasizes a well-rounded schedule of weekly tutorials for building up the skills necessary for performing research. There will be weekly seminars on current research in physics. The program will culminate with a research symposium that provides each student with an opportunity to present his/her research findings to a broader audience. Students will be required to write a research paper based on their research and will be encouraged to present it at national conferences.
