The MBSP objectives at Texas A and I University are to strengthen the biomedical research and research training capabilities. These objectives were accomplished by the addition of an animal custodian, renovation of the animal facility, purchasing new equipment, providing released time for faculty and providing student research participants. A new animal facility and animal custodian were added to the University. The University supplied the funding for the animal custodian and the MBSP funded the renovation of the animal facility. There are 13 separate rooms for different animal species. The floors, walls and ceilings are concrete and can be scrubbed or washed with high pressure hose. The walls are free of cracks and utility penetrations and animals cannot escape and other animals could not enter the facility. Because of this addition the University and students will benefit from a better research and teaching program in which live animals are needed. Students have been motivated by working along with faculty doing research. Students and faculty have published their research in international journals and presented papers at professional meetings. One new project was added and one faculty was added to an existing project. During the past six years students in the MBSP have had weekly seminars which gave the students a chance to discuss their research and related literature with faculty. The students have gained a better understanding of the current literature and have had numerous occasions to present their findings. One of the real plus factors in the MBS program at Tesas A and I University is the visiting seminar program. Outside researchers are brought in to act as consultants and to give seminars. Many of the seminar speakers have been Mexican-American scientists, which have helped motivate the students in our program. This same program helps students make contact with other professors at different universities.
