This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The overall goal of this activity is to develop a resource that will build capacity in applied research, technology, and library information. To accomplish this goal, two research/service centers will be developed: 1) the Center for Health Research and Bioinformatics and, 2) the Information, Telecommunication, and Computing Center. With new technologies available to RCMI scientists, including gene sequencing capabilities, there are increasing amounts of data that must be gathered, processed, and interpreted. Additionally, pharmacy investigators are often incorporating data from non-typical sources to study health outcomes, patient satisfaction, and the role of pharmaceutics in public health. To enable investigators to design and carry out studies that effectively utilize the vast and complex data that are available, this activity will establish the Center for Health Research and Bioinformatics. This Center will provide a variety of data collection, handling and data management services, and will also foster interdisciplinary research collaboration that will reduce the time from drug/therapy discovery to clinical and public health application. The Center will be unique in building the foundation for leading edge research, using a variety of interdisciplinary methodologies, targeted to improving the health of minority and underserved populations. The planned activity will strengthen and integrate computer infrastructure and digital library information resources through the development of the Information, Telecommunication, and Computing Center. This Center will ensure faculty are provided with state-of-the-art computing and networking capabilities allowing for the transfer and integration of experimental data, graphs, images, and library resource material. One important aspect of the Center s work will be the Science Research Center Virtual Library Electronic Reference System project. This project will entail the development and maintenance of a virtual library developed specifically for the needs of college faculty, staff, and students. Integrated with the College s Silicon Graphics, Inc. Origin2000 server, along with effective technical support, this virtual library will provide a major computing and information infrastructure for advancing RCMI research. In terms of computing and telecommunication enhancements, the Center will establish and maintain a College Intranet to improve data and file sharing and communication within the College and beyond. A pilot project will be conducted utilizing the infrastructure and human resource capabilities of the activity. The project will use a variety of research methods, including survey research, and computer-assisted telephone interviewing. This applied investigation will have direct impacts on reducing health disparities. Similar studies, to be conducted through the Center for Health Research and Bioinformatics but supported by external research funds, will strengthen collaborative and interdisciplinary research conducted at Florida A & M University.
