This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Biomedical science has entered the era of informatics with massive data sets being generated, moved between research sites, and analyzed using wide bandwidth and powerful computing strategies. In order for Meharry to participate with the rest of the nation in these new scientific endeavors it needs to be connected, with the infrastructure to collaborate. Meharry Medical College requested a supplement to RCMI grant 5-G12-RR03032-21 for enhancement of connectivity to carry out high-bandwidth science applications in conjunction with the RCMI Translational Research Network and other national and international research networks. .
The Specific Aims were: 1) Clinical and Research Database upgrade 2) Videoconferencing capacity increase 3) Internet and Network Performance upgrade 4) Improved computer hardware and software in the bioinformatics cores. These improvements will result in Meharry having the capacity to participate in national and international networked research programs. The participation of researchers who are focusing on health disparities and the health needs of minority and other underserved populations, as Meharry researchers do, is essential if the benefits of this new research paradigm are to be accessible to all.
