This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing theresources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject andinvestigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed isfor the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.This protocol will test the hypothesis that IGF-I slows the progression of muscle weakness in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Investigators will determine whether IGF-I slows the rate of change in strength in ALS patients as assessed by manual muscle testing. Additional variables include: Will IGF-I prolong the tracheostomy free survival in ALS patients; will IGF-I affect functional performance in ALS patients as assessed by the ALS functional rating scale.
