The long-term goal of this study is to achieve insulin-independence in patients with type 1 diabetes, thereby eliminating the need for insulin injections to maintain normal glucose levels, ameliorating severe hypoglycemia and potentially decreasing the development of diabetes-related complications. The specific hypothesis in this phase 1 trial is that islet transplantation is safe in patients with type 1 diabetes and preserved renal function or a previous kidney transplant.
