This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. In this study, we will identify subjects with childhood onset diabetes which is either non-autoimmune-mediated, diagnosed within the first year of life, associated with an atypical onset or course and a strong family history, or type 2 diabetes. We will obtain clinical data related to the diagnosis and course of diabetes and a blood sample for DNA analysis at the SUR/KATP loci. If mutations are identified, these mutations will be studied in vitro at the cellular level to better understand the insulin secretion pathway and its relationships to diabetes mellitus.
