This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The purpose of this study is twofold.
The first aim i s to validate a performance based measure of executive function for children 8 to 12 years of age.
The second aim i s to compare the performance of children with Sickle Cell Disease to that of age and gender matched controls. The symptoms of SCD may have an impact on children's performance and participation in their daily activities. However, there has been little empirical evidence about the performance and participation in daily activities of children with SCD. The only area of daily functioning of children with SCD addressed in the literature is in the area of academic attainment and achievement. This study will address instrumental and leisure activities as well as academic performance. The results of this study will help to describe the effects of SCD on the everyday life of children and will help guide the development of more effective occupational therapy treatments for this population.
