This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing theresources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject andinvestigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed isfor the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.EDIC is a multicenter (28 site), epidemiologic study of over 1350 surviving subjects with type 1 diabetes who participated in the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial (DCCT) between 1984 and 1993. The EDIC study continues to follow that cohort to gather and analyse data on complications of type 1 diabetes over the long term. The study is now in its fourteenth year, and has been approved by the NIH/NIDDK for another ten years of follow up. This study provides valuable information regarding the long term course of the complications of diabetes in a carefully characterized study population. The effects of an interaction between established and putative risk factors, including diabetes treatment and level of glycemic control for microvascular, neurologic and macrovascular long term complications is being studied. Dissemination of the study findings is an ongoing process, and there have been numerous publications and presentations of the study findings so far.
