This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. This study will determine the prevalence of depression and exposure to trauma in patients initially presenting to the Grady Diabetes Clinic and, in the GCRC, define the biologic pathways through which depression contributes to metabolism imbalance. This study will also ascertain whether treatment of depression via a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind trial affects metabolic balance and improves overall glycemic control and patient adherence to scheduled return appointments and use of medication.
