This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The purpose of this study is to identify accurate indicators of weight loss in obese patients that may be utilized to determine the reduction in the associated disease risk from morbid obesity. Patients will undergo a weight loss program over a three-month period, comprising either medical or surgical intervention. The effect of weight loss on anthropormetric measurements, body composition and fat distribution will be determined. Changes in body composition and fat distribution will be examined for their effects on important risk biomarkers for obesity-related disease.
