This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The purpose of this study is to find out if there are differences in blood levels of 6-MP in children of different racial and ethnic backgrounds. If there are differences in blood levels between groups, a second purpose of the study is to find out if the differences are due to variations in drug absorption and/or metabolism between the groups or if the differences are due to variations in patterns of taking the medication. A third purpose of this study is to identify if there are differences in the characteristics of leukemia between the ethnic and racial groups. If this study determines that there are differences in leukemia characteristics or in blood levels of 6-MP between the different ethnic or racial groups, a final purpose of this study is to find out if these differences affect survival rates.
