This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Evaluation of emtricitabine as a treatment for HIV infection in Pediatric Patients is necessary to develop new antiretroviral medications that provide simple and convenient treatment regimens with a potent and durable response. The strategy for the clinical development of emtricitabine for the treatment of HIV Infection in pediatric patients is a two-step process with the goal of providing a dosing guideline in children. The first step is to determine the plasma profiles and the second step is to explore the long-term safety and antiretroviral activity of emtricitabine when used with other antiretroviral medications.
