This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing theresources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject andinvestigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed isfor the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.Specifically we will test the hypothesis that patients with diabetes will exhibit reversible, exercise-induced decreases in PCr/ATP and PCr/inorganic phosphate consistent with an imbalance in energy supply and demand. Furthermore, we propose that these changes will be present only in those diabetic patients with evidence of systemic microvascular disease and will be accompanied by evidence of contractile dysfunction as assessed by cine MRI. Finally, we anticpate that the observation of metabolic and functional abnormalities will be predictive of short-and long-term outcomes.
