This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing theresources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject andinvestigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed isfor the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. This is a multicenter, phase II, prospective, randomized clinical trial of Activated Protein C (APC) versus placebo for the treatment of Acute Lung Injury (ALI). The objective is to test the efficacy of APC for improving clinical outcomes in patients wth ALI. The primary endpoint of the study is the number of ventilator-free days (VFDs). The potential mechanisms for improved outcomes include a decrease in pulmonary inflammation, improved blood flow, and a more rapid resolution of ALI.
