This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The main focus of this study is to identify and elaborate the neurological processes underlying consiciousness. The strategy is to investigate patients with deficits of conscious sensory processing.
The specific aims are to determine how: (1) the quantitative measures from electroencephalography are affected by brain injury and how these change as patients recover from their neurologic insult; (2) the quantitative measures from neuroradiologic imaging (e.g.,PET and MRI scans) are affected by brain injury and how these change as patients recover from their neurlogic insult; (3) the electroencephalogram and neuroradiologic imaging (e.g.,PET and MRI scans) patterns may change with various auditory, visual and tactile stimuli in patients with brain injuries and normal volunteers; and (4) to develop electroencephalographic and neurologic exam criteria for selection of patients with impairment of consiciousness after brain injury for potential emerging therapies.
