This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The primary aim of this study is to determine the effects of the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery and the bilipancreatic diversion with duodenal switch surgery on bone metabolism. Specifically they will examine bone turnover, bone density and vitamin D status. A prospective, pilot study will be conducted with 60 subjects who are followed for 24 months following surgery. This will serve as a pilot study to establish the effect of the surgery on bone and will lead to the design of further studies involving interventions to prevent any detrimental effects on bone.
