This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The substance, brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), is related to various psychological disorders such as depression. Previous studies suggest that depressed people have less BDNF than healthy people, but researchers do not know why this is the case. This study is designed to quantify relationships among psychological and biological variables such as depression severity, serum BDNF concentration, and BDNF genes. By analyzing such relationships it may be possible to draw inferences about BDNF's functional role in depression.
