The institution listed isfor the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.Alcohol dependence, or alcoholism , affects approximately 14 million Americans. Approximately 1 in 5 adult men and 1 in 10 adult women who visit primary care providers engage in risky drinking behavior or meet criteria for alcohol abuse or dependence. Understanding the causes and risk factors associated with the development of alcohol dependence is very important. The proposed study is expected to identify specific factors that may be associated with risk for the development of alcohol dependence and treatment of alcohol dependence.
