This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Although the ketogenic diet has been used for more than 70 years, it is rarely used outside of centers with extensive experience in its use amp; extensive dietary experience amp; support. Much still needs to be learned about its efficacy for controlling different seizure types, its effects on EEG's amp; pharmacological treatment, its long term side effects and mechanism of action. Traditionally the ketogenic diet has been used in young children, between the ages of 2 amp; 6 years, with myoclonic, atonic, amp; tonic clonic seizures. Although some studies have indicated that the diet is not as effective in partial or absence seizures, the data to support these studies has not been substantiated. The purpose of this study is observational: to monitor the implementation of the ketogenic diet, assess its efficacy, delineate problems in its use and implementation, and determine the benefits and diffculties associated with its long-term use.
