This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The goal of this project is to quantitatively compare the effect of the fecal tagging with and without the use of cathartic cleansing with regard to patient acceptance, amount of residual fecal material, and the distribution of fecal tagging agent in the residual feces as seen in virtual colonoscopy (CT colonography (CTC)). To this end, we will perform CTC examinations with various combinations of fecal-tagging and bowel preparation methods, and develop computerized methods for quantification of the amount of residual fecal material and the distribution of the fecal tagging agent in the residual feces. The preliminary data obtained by this study are expected to establish a fecal-tagging and bowel preparation method that provides a minimum preparation and an optimal diagnostic performance. Such a method will make the screening of colon cancer by CTC a reliable option for large patient populations, and will lead to reduced mortality due to colon cancer.
