This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing theresources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject andinvestigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed isfor the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. This study will clarify the mechanisms of sympathoactivation to meal ingestion. Insulin is known to induce sympathetic nervous system activation after carbohydrate administration but is not increased after fat ingestion. Thus, increases in sympathetic nerve activity (SNA) after a fat load would suggest the involvement of mediators other than insulin. These investigators propose to study the acute muscle and skin SNA response to oral fat, carbohydrate or water in lean and obese subjects.
